Charlottesville, VA Area Guide

Charlottesville, Virginia and Albemarle County lie in the midst of beautiful vineyards, farms and orchards as well as miles of natural beauty. Rich in the history of the area and its country, Charlottesville is home to two of Thomas Jefferson’s greatest works, the University of Virginia and his home, Monticello. Filled with the energy of music, film, and literature, Charlottesville provides a rich environment to fulfill your every need.

History

Albemarle County was partitioned in 1761, land on the south put aside for the formation of Buckingham and Amherst counties. A thousand acres were secured in the center of the county and in 1762, an Act of Assembly was passed, creating the town of Charlottesville as well as authorizing the removal of the county seat to there. Named in honor of Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg Strelitz, the bride of King George III, the new courthouse, pillory, stocks and whipping posts were duly erected on what is now the Court Square. Fifty acres next to it were laid off in lots and streets. Located along the Rivanna River, it was formed along a trade route called Three Notched Road.

Unlike most of Virginia, Charlottesville was spared the brunt of the Civil War, with the exception of the Skirmish at Rio Hill. The city was eventually surrendered by the Mayor and others to spare, even though The Charlottesville Factory was accidentally burned during General Sheridan’s raid through out the Shenandoah Valley.

Charlotteville is the home of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, the Leander McCormick Observatory and the CFA Institute. Located close to Richmond (70 miles) and Washington, D.C. (115 miles) Charlottesville is a great place to raise a family, enjoying the small town atmosphere while being close to the big city amenities.
